Abstract

The digitalization of medical education has encouraged a shift from printed books to electronic books (e-books). Since the 2024/2025 academic year, the Faculty of Medicine (FK) of Universitas Swadaya Gunung Jati (UGJ) Cirebon has provided free e-books to new students. However, empirical data regarding student perceptions of this policy remain limited. Objective: To identify medical students’ perceptions of e-books regarding their benefits, usage, and associated barriers. Methods: This quantitative descriptive study used a cross-sectional approach. A total of 261 preclinical students were selected through stratified random sampling and completed a valid and reliable questionnaire (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.832). Data were analyzed using univariate analysis. Results: Most respondents were female (61.7%), and all had used e-books (100%). Perceptions of e-book benefits were predominantly high (93.9%), particularly regarding practicality and ease of sharing (98.9%). Indonesian-language content was the strongest factor associated with e-book usage (90.8% in the high category), while reading for more than three hours was the weakest (59.0%). Reported barriers were mostly moderate (71.6%), including eye strain (87.0%), difficulty focusing (69.0%), and discomfort when reading on a screen (67.4%). Conclusion: Medical students at FK UGJ generally perceive e-books positively, especially regarding accessibility and practicality. However, visual discomfort and concentration difficulties require attention to optimize e-books as learning resources.
