Islamic religious manuscripts from the Indonesian archipelago represent an intellectual heritage that documents the evolution of Islamic thought and traditions. However, the process of repeated copying can introduce scribal errors and textual variations, which may affect how the texts are understood. Consequently, textual criticism is essential for examining, reconstructing, and preserving the content of these manuscripts. This study aims to analyze the role and function of textual criticism within the philological study of Islamic manuscripts from the Indonesian archipelago specifically regarding the reconstruction, transmission, and preservation of religious texts. The research employs a qualitative-descriptive approach, utilizing a literature review methodology. Data were gathered through the identification and documentation of relevant scholarly literature, followed by a descriptive-analytical assessment. The findings indicate that textual criticism involves several stages: inventorying and describing manuscripts, transliteration, comparing textual variants, evaluating readings, performing emendations, and preparing a critical edition of the text. These stages facilitate the identification of scribal errors and the establishment of readings that are academically sound. Furthermore, textual criticism contributes to an understanding of how religious knowledge was transmitted and supports the preservation of the intellectual heritage of Islam in the Indonesian archipelago. Thus, textual criticism serves as a vital component in maintaining the accuracy and continuity of the archipelago’s collection of religious manuscripts.
