Abstract

Traditional arts play an important role in community life, serving not only as a form of entertainment but also as a source of identity and cultural heritage passed down from one generation to another. One form of local culture that continues to exist is karawitan, a traditional Javanese musical art performed using gamelan instruments. However, social change and the limited involvement of younger generations have become challenges to the sustainability of traditional arts. Therefore, the preservation of karawitan requires the participation of the community, local government, younger generations, and educational institutions. This article examines the preservation of karawitan as an effort to strengthen local culture in Kanding Village, Somagede District, Banyumas Regency. This study employed a descriptive approach, with data collected through interviews with local karawitan figures and the direct participation of students from KKN 005 UIN Prof. K.H. Saifuddin Zuhri Purwokerto in karawitan activities. The students participated in regular practice sessions every Monday and Thursday afternoon at the residence of the Head of RT 02 RW 04 under the guidance of Mr. Halim, a local karawitan figure. These activities not only provided students with experience in playing gamelan instruments but also introduced them to the values and efforts involved in preserving karawitan. The findings indicate that the sustainability of karawitan in Kanding Village is supported by regular practice, community participation, support from the village government, and the involvement of students and younger generations. Nevertheless, regeneration remains a major challenge. Therefore, greater involvement of younger generations is essential to ensure that karawitan continues to be preserved as an important part of Kanding Village's local cultural identity.
