Abstract

This study measures and compares the knowledge dimension of Islamic financial literacy among students at four State Islamic Higher Education Institutions in South Sulawesi: UIN Alauddin Makassar, IAIN Bone, IAIN Palopo, and IAIN Parepare. An online survey was conducted among 400 active students using purposive sampling with a quota of approximately 100 respondents per institution; 399 valid responses were analyzed. The instrument comprised 26 Islamic financial knowledge items covering basic principles, Islamic financing, Islamic investment, and Islamic insurance. Scores at all institutions fell within the low category (<60%): UIN Alauddin Makassar 55.92%, IAIN Bone 52.64%, IAIN Parepare 50.92%, and IAIN Palopo 47.88%. One-way ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests, used as sensitivity analyses, yielded consistent evidence of cross-institutional differences (p = 0.007 and p = 0.002), although the effect size was small (eta-squared = 0.030). The findings therefore point to a gap between normative and technical-operational knowledge rather than evidence of a direct gap between knowledge and actual financial behavior. The study recommends greater emphasis on product mechanisms and contracts through case-based learning, simulations, and exposure to Islamic financial institutions.
