Abstract

Education in Indonesia is currently facing challenges related to environmental degradation and the need for sustainable development values to be integrated into learning. One of the efforts to address this issue is through the use of illustrated storybooks containing Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) values. This study aims to examine the effect of using illustrated storybooks with ESD content on the environmental care character of fourth grade students at SDN Mluweh 01. This type of research is quantitative with a quasi-experimental design using a pretest–posttest control group. The sample consisted of 18 students selected through purposive sampling. Data collection techniques used questionnaires, observation sheets, and documentation, with indicators including waste disposal habits, energy saving, classroom cleanliness, and involvement in environmental activities. Data analysis employed statistical tests (t-test) to determine differences between the experimental and control groups. The results showed an increase in the average score of students’ environmental care character from 67.25 (categorized as fairly caring) to 85 (categorized as caring–high). This indicates that illustrated storybooks with ESD content are effective in improving students’ environmental care character.
