Abstract

This study aims to analyze the dating relationship dynamics of student activists at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Padjadjaran, amid academic and organizational demands. The study employed a qualitative method with a case study approach to explore emotional experiences, interaction patterns, time management, and relationship maintenance strategies. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, nonparticipant observation, documentation, and literature review involving six informants actively engaged in campus organizations while maintaining romantic relationships. Data analysis used thematic analysis through transcription, coding, categorization, and theme development. The findings revealed that romantic relationships among student activists were generally formed through intensive interaction in academic and organizational activities. Dating relationships were interpreted as emotional support spaces, motivational sources, and interpersonal learning media. Major challenges included limited time, role pressure, and priority adjustment between academic responsibilities, organizational activities, and personal relationships. Nevertheless, consistent communication, mutual trust, and adaptive abilities became important factors in maintaining harmonious and sustainable romantic relationships among student activists. The study identified gender differences in expressing affection and needs within relationships. From symbolic interactionism and Goffman’s dramaturgy perspectives, romantic relationships among student activists are influenced by meaning construction, role management, and individuals’ abilities to balance organizational life with relationship needs.
